In an August 2006 study, more than 3,500 samples of dust were taken from mattresses found in 22 different study centers to be analyzed for different dust mite allergens. Researchers found massive numbers of dust mites allergens in over 68% of the samples. The study concluded: "...precautions to minimize exposure to dust mite allergens is essential. Avoidance in the bedroom is critical because people spend more time there than in other rooms of the house."
